he's a stupid and horribly gullible echidna who epic fails at his job.

We could talk about how he was before Sega ruined him, when he was at his best.

In Sonic 3& Knuckles, Knuckles didn't know Eggman or Sonic, so of course he could have been fooled. Anyone could have been fooled.

In Sonic Triple Trouble, it was supposed to be like a game gear version of Sonic 3, so no need to go into that.

In Sonic Adventure, Eggman didn't really tell him everything, just enough to confuse him. That was okay, too.

Everywhere else was just bad, though. They made him from gullible, to stupid. He wasn't originally stupid, He was tricky. He probably wasn't the brightest bulb in the box but he wasn't Stupid.

come on, eggman was already his enemy in SADX, why the heck would listen to naything he said in the first place?

He was confused. He didn't really believe him until he saw Sonic with something shiny in his hands, which he thought was a piece of the Master Emerald.

and yet that whole secene could've been avoided if he said "hand over the MASTER emerald" instead of "hand over the emeralds!"

True, True. That doesn't make him stupid. That just wasn't the best thing to say.

And Knuckles was not always stupid. He used to be awesome. He is way better as a stubborn guardion at Angel island while also being Sonics rival rather than now that he is Sonic's moron sidekick.
